The playground slide I knew and climbed repeatedly--lovingly, joyfully; not realizing what I was feeling--was made of stainless steel and cast aluminum, I believe. The slide was polished with handfuls of sand, the grains slipping from my grasp as I climbed, the meager remainder released at the top then ground against the shiny surface by my jeans. We never thought to crack an egg or dribble pancake batter down the slope, but if we had then breakfast, fully cooked, would have awaited at the bottom.
